Behind Closed Doors

opportunity offered by ArtEZ Conservatorium Masters of Music to the Sound of Innovation master students of the year 2023/2024

As part of the Sound City project, an in-depth artistic research process was conducted and developed, which led to the creation of the project.
My colleagues and I had the chance to interview a variety of individuals from the informal health care field in the Netherlands.
In between listening to those stories, I found it intriguing to pay attention to every little detail, like the sound of the cooking stoves or the little wear marks on a cosy leather sofa, as objects also store memories.
Moreover, I had the chance to meet an elderly woman during our search, and she became inspiration to me and two other artists for the song “Whale in a Bowl“. The composition uses a metaphor to illustrate how it is impossible to confine a free spirit like the whale in a little cage like the bowl. The whale will always find her way to the water and her freedom, regardless of what happens in life.

My research professor was so pleased with my results that I was asked to provide an example and deliver a brief master class on how I conducted my artistic research to the students from the previous year. On top of that, I was also invited to EPARM, which is an incredible opportunity to share my practice-based work at a European level.
